Green / Energy

Muskegon County Habitat for Humanity is committed to energy efficiency and green standards that benefit our families and our environment. Since 2008, MCHFH homes have received a 5 Star Plus Energy Star rating through the use of:

Insulated Concrete Foundation that produce foundation with R-Value of 22
Air Sealing Package that reduces air infiltration through use of foam and wall flashing
Qualified Heating Equipment
with a 90%, or better, efficiency rating
Ventilation
through a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV)
Insulation
achieving an R-30 in framing and R-49 in attic utilizing blown cellulose
Windows and Doors
that are Qualified Energy Star rated

These construction standards greatly reduce the homeowner’s energy costs. Heating costs for a three 1350 square foot home now average only $40/month! This is especially beneficial for our low-income families who will now be able to use the thousands of dollars saved over the life of the home for other critical needs.

Building to Energy Star standards is more costly during construction but MCHFH feels the benefits to our families and the environment make it a good investment. Still, to keep Habitat’s homes affordable, donor support of our green efforts is needed.
